How to Value a Used Car

Pricing a used car accurately is one of the hardest parts of buying or selling. Here is how valuations work and how to know if you're getting a good deal.

Retail vs Trade Valuations

When you look up a car valuation, you will usually see two different numbers. Understanding the difference is crucial.

Retail Value

This is what you expect to pay if you buy the car from a dealership. It is the highest valuation because it includes the dealer's profit margin, the cost of preparing the car (valeting, servicing), and the legal protections/warranties they must provide.

Trade Value (or Part-Exchange Value)

This is what a dealer would pay you if you sold the car to them. It is the lowest valuation. If you are buying a car privately (from a person on their driveway), the fair price usually sits somewhere between the Trade and Retail valuations.

What affects a car's value?

A valuation is just an estimate. The actual worth of the specific car on the driveway depends on:

  • Mileage: Is it above or below average for its age?
  • Service History: A car with a Full Main Dealer Service History is worth more than one with missing stamps.
  • Condition: Dents, scratched alloys, or torn seats reduce the value by the cost required to fix them.
  • Options: Desirable factory extras (panoramic roofs, premium audio) hold value better than base models.

Comparing the Asking Price

If a dealer is asking £15,000 for a car while an estimated retail valuation is £13,500, the difference is a useful prompt to compare the vehicle's condition, specification and comparable asking prices. A valuation is an estimate, not a confirmed sale price or proof that a car is overpriced.

With AI Reg Check, you can enter the seller's asking price alongside the registration plate to review it against available valuation information. Asking prices are not achieved sale prices. The AI Buy Score and "Would I Buy It?" assessment require both current mileage and asking price.
