Car Finance Check

Outstanding finance can complicate a used-car purchase. Review available history information and verify any finance concerns before paying.

Why an outstanding finance check matters

A huge number of used cars on the market are still being paid off on some form of credit agreement, such as a Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) or Hire Purchase (HP). Until that agreement is settled in full, the finance company, not the person selling the car, is the legal owner. That single fact is why an outstanding finance check is one of the most important things you can do before buying.

The danger is simple. If you buy a car that still has finance owing on it, the finance company may have rights in the vehicle. You could be left with no car and no easy way to recover the money you paid. A low asking price alone does not establish that a car has finance or any other problem.

What the finance check covers

With AI Reg Check, outstanding finance is reported as part of the Full Vehicle History Check. It may report finance markers where information is available; coverage and update timing can vary. Alongside finance, the same report may include:

  • Insurance write-off markers and category (for example Cat S or Cat N)
  • Stolen vehicle markers, where available
  • Mileage discrepancies flagged against MOT records
  • Keeper (previous owner) information and registration plate changes
  • Import and export markers, where available

This provenance information may help you identify questions to ask the seller. It is decision support, not a legal guarantee, and it does not replace seeing the car, the V5C logbook and any finance settlement paperwork in person.

How it works with AI Reg Check

Start by running a free AI Car Check on the registration to review available vehicle details, MOT history, mileage timeline, valuation and keeper information. The AI Buy Scoreand "Would I Buy It?" assessment are available where eligible, when both current mileage and asking price are supplied.

When you are seriously considering a car, add the Full Vehicle History Check. If a finance marker is found, review it as a reported provider-history result and verify it with the seller and finance company. Any eligible AI Buy Assessment is decision support and should not be treated as proof of legal status or as a substitute for verification.

Worked example

Suppose the Full Vehicle History Check returns a finance marker for a vehicle. Treat it as a finding to verify with the seller and finance company before proceeding. The marker is not itself proof of the current legal position; request up-to-date settlement information and make your decision only after resolving the question.

Before you hand over any money

A finance check is a strong first line of defence, but combine it with common sense. Confirm the seller's name matches the V5C, ask for a settlement letter if finance is indicated, pay in a traceable way, and never let a good price rush you into skipping these steps. The small cost of a Full Vehicle History Check is trivial next to the cost of losing a car to repossession.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens if I buy a car that still has finance on it?

If a car has outstanding finance, the finance company legally owns it until the debt is cleared. If you buy it, they can repossess it and you may lose both the car and the money you paid, even if you bought it in good faith.

Does a car finance check guarantee the car is finance-free?

No check can guarantee that. A Full Vehicle History Check reports finance markers held on the databases we source from, but it is decision support, not a legal guarantee. Always ask the seller for settlement paperwork and view the V5C.

Is AI Reg Check the same as HPI or the DVLA?

No. AI Reg Check is an independent service and is not affiliated with HPI, the DVLA or any official body. We provide a Full Vehicle History Check plus AI analysis to help you make a more informed decision.
